Kings of Persis
Dārēv (Darios) I | Darayan I
AR (Silver) | Drachm | 132–100 BC
| | 1h
Coin Overview
Silver drachm of Dārēv (Darayan I) struck between 132 BC and 100 BC.
During his reign, the coinage of Persis entered a distinctive phase marked by the introduction of the flat kausia-type headdress and the prominent fire-altar reverse. The design reflects a shift toward a stronger royal identity while preserving sacred imagery tied to Ahura Mazda. The Aramaic legend identifies the ruler as “Darayan King,” often engraved in partial or abbreviated form. His issues also introduce the royal title MLK’, meaning “minor king,” symbolizing Persis’ semi-independent authority within a larger imperial realm.
